We know that everyone can't afford a GPS system for their car but we got one and we love it. At this point, we'll tell you that if you can't afford one in the $1000 range, don't waste your money on a cheaper one. The ones for $1000 have the Text-to-Speech which will say the street names that you're supposed to turn on. They also recalculate very quickly to tell you what to do if you've turned the wrong way.
Know that "Voice Prompt" means that it'll say stuff like "turn right in .5 miles" but that doesn't mean it'll say "turn right on Indiana street". You need Text-to-Speech if you want street names to be read to you.
Also, check all reviews on sites like Amazon.com. We've found them generally reliable as long as there are at least 5 different reviews that say generally the same thing. When they said that our model could be viewed in sunlight...they were right. That also means that there are cheaper models that you can't view in sunlight (another unfortunate truth). We'll tell you, if the screen can't be viewed in sunlight and it just says "turn right", in some spots, it's not clear where to turn! When they tell you the street name and there are two right turns very close to each other, then you'll know which one to take.
One last bit of advice...don't buy a GPS in a panic! Do research and know how to use it before an emergency comes up.
