We have VAGUE recollection of Starsky and Hutch. But after watching the DVDs of the tv show, we now know why it lasted so long.
TV StoryLine: David Starsky is a detective with his partner Kenneth Hutchinson. They have a regular beat where everyone on the street knows them. Starsky drives the red Ford Torino with the famous white stripe. Hutch always drives a less cool car. Most of the time, Starsky drives in his car. Starsky is a bit rougher around the edges than Hutch, but both are extremely loyal to each other and are law abiding. Whenever they are stuck on a case, they visit Huggy Bear at his bar/hangout. Huggy has his ear to the ground and knows what's happening on the street. Interestingly enough, the street knows this about Huggy and they even use Huggy to communicate to Starsky and Hutch. The police captain also knows about Huggy and often calls him if he wants to know about Starsky and Hutch. Huggy always can be counted on and is loyal to Starsky and Hutch.
Movie StoryLine: Hutch steals from drug dealers (and dead victims), Starsky is a good guy. The movie supposedly starts at the time that they become partners (before the tv show). HUH? Again, casual viewing of the tv show would yield clues...like the fact that Starsky and Hutch knew each other since the academy!!! Hutch NEVER EVER would have stolen from criminals!!! Starsky is too clean...did someone confuse their characters? Now, to be honest, Starsky was a good guy, but he was rougher than Ben Stiller played him. Starsky would never have lived in ANYONE'S shadow, not Dad and certainly NOT MOM!
Huggy...Ok...we can buy Snoop Dogg as Huggy, but the REAL Huggy had more COOL...I don't think he would have ever caddied and allowed himself to be treated so disrespectfully! Huggy was a 70's icon...cool and smooth. The movie claimed to be set in the 70's...Snoop, you should have studied Huggy's coooolllll.
The movie was barely viewable, even if you hadn't seen the tv show. But after watching the tv show...it was just WEIRD. Character transplants everywhere. We think that Ben Stiller would have made a great Starsky...but Owen Wilson couldn't be Hutch at all!!! We never bought him as Hutch....it wrecked the show. Maybe we could see this as a parody of Starsky and Hutch, but not as a movie version of it.
