Workshop Flop - No Sales
By WilburGoose @ 1:16 PM :: 82 Views :: 0 Comments :: :: Business Articles

Everyone has had the "disasterous" workshop where everyone enjoys themselves, but none of them buy.  Or worse, few or no guests arrive and sales are $0 (or awful close!).  We know that it's very painful to invest in the catalog, make and take supplies, time spent etc etc for these workshops that don't even earn the hostess benefits.  Your reaction to this situation will indicate what type of demo you are.  Please choose which type you'd like to be:

The Sourpuss/vengeful demo reaction:
  • Call hostess: "Hey hostess lady! You didn't work hard enough.  You didn't call your guests, you didn't invite enough people etc.  YOU now have to give back the catalog"
  • Call hostess: "Your friends used up $3.26 worth of MY cardstock - PAY UP!"
  • Call Hostess: "This is my BUSINESS!  Why did you waste my time when I could have been selling my stamps to someone else?"  (or worse) "Why did you waste my time when I could have been sitting on the computer complaining about not having workshops and earning $0 while trolling Split Coast Stampers for someone who will commiserate"
  • Result: Hostess won't place order with you ever again and even though she had another friend ready to place an order, they consipire to find another demo...

The Business Demo Reaction:
  • Note to self: "Maybe next time, I should coach my hostesses to select guests who are interested in buying stamps"  "Possibly, I could have introduced my catalog differently to the guests...maybe they really didn't realize that I was here to promote sales of the products.  I know that some hostesses present this as a 'fun day' to make some cards, instead of a buying opportunity"
  • Note to self: "In business, to make money, I have to take some calculated risks.  How much am I really out?  $10 for a catalog, some cardstock and 5 hours - ouch, that's painful.  If I don't invest that time and money, I KNOW that I'll get $0 sales.  I took a chance, it didn't work.  Now, I'll have to find ways of finding other hostesses who will help me find qualified buyers"
  • Note to self: "In 3 months, I'll find this situation very funny..."  and "Oh by the way...what an opportunity to practice my grace under fire"
  • Call Hostess: "Hi Holly Hostess!  I'm sorry that your workshop didn't meet the $150 workshop minimum.  Please keep the catalog as my gift to you.  Maybe your friend Suzy will want to place an outside order.  You know...if you gather $150 in outside orders, I'll give you all of the hostess benefits!  Suzy and Mary seemed to enjoy stamping when they made their projects.  Saturday may not have been the right day for them, but maybe in a few weeks, they'll be ready to browse your catalog and place an order."

    (GooseNOTE: be aware that some hostesses may be more comfortable with outside orders or 'friend to friend' selling instead of the home workshop environment - LET THEM GET OUTSIDE ORDERS AND LET THEM KEEP THE BENEFITS!  If you don't act like Sourpuss/Vengeful demo, all is not lost!)
  • Call/Email friend, upline, support group:  "WAHHHHH...another $0 workshop!"
  • Result: Hostess feels bad, but places her own orders with you for quite awhile.  She meets a new friend who wants to buy some stuff and hostess gives her your name...
